Summary

The Police Sergeant shall perform general police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. The Woodstock Village Police Department commits itself to the community to ensure quality of life and a high level of public safety. In providing public safety services, they safeguard Constitutional rights and maintain public confidence. The department strives to enforce the laws in a fair and equal manner, while using discretion appropriately. The mission of the Woodstock Village Police Department is to provide a safe and orderly environment in Woodstock through professionalism, high-quality police service, an active partnership with the community, and a concern for individual dignity by ensuring fair and equal treatment for all. The average daily traffic is in excess of 10,000 vehicles in a small residential and highly visited tourist community. With this, the department must perform duties to ensure that vehicles and pedestrians move safely throughout all of Woodstock.

Supervision Received

  • Works under the general supervision of the Chief of Police and reports to the Chief of Police.

Supervision Exercised

  • Supervises four full-time Officers and a number of part-time Officers under the direction of the Chief of Police.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervision:
  • Supervises the activities of the Police Officers.
  • Plans, assigns, and directs work.
  • Sanctions employees, commends employees, addresses complaints, and resolves problems.
  • Answers procedural and legal questions from officers.
  • Relays sentiments from the Chief of Police.
  • May also be called upon to supervise the Field Training and Evaluation Program.
  • Performs routine patrols of the Village and Town according to departmental rules and regulations.
  • Reviews daily arrest/incident reports to familiarize self with current investigations and developments, proper use of coding system, and ensures thoroughness and organization of reports and case files.
  • Equipment Care:
    • Includes preventative and corrective care of weapons, vehicles, radars, etc.
    • May be called upon to specialize in a certain aspect of law enforcement, such as weapons and self-defense training and certification, vehicle maintenance, equipment supply, or procedure documentation and thus serve as the authority for the entire department.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of a High School diploma or GED.
    • (Preferred) Associate or bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current level III law enforcement certification through the Vermont Criminal Justice Council (VCJC), or an out-of-state certification that can transfer to Vermont in accordance with the VCJC policies.
  • Minimum of four years of law enforcement experience.
    • (Preferred) 10 years of law enforcement experience.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws.
  • (Preferred) Training and experience as an instructor in a law enforcement discipline.

  • Ability to act as Chief of Police when needed and ensure all standards are met.
  • Ability to work well with other law enforcement partners.

Physical Demands

  • The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job of a Police Officer.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Internally, work is normally performed in a climate-controlled office environment.
  • Externally, work is performed under variable weather conditions and in an environment with considerable potential for personal danger, including significant risk of injury and/or death, as can be expected in situations endangering personal safety during emergencies or when conducting investigations.
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
  • The noise level in the work environment varies from quiet to loud.
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as per departmental needs.

  • This position is part of the local bargaining unit and as such, the pay scale is set by a contract between the union and the Village of Woodstock. The current pay scale is PS-1 $28.48 to PS-21 $38.36.
